Welcome, Young Author!

Welcome!

Before you begin writing, here’s something worth knowing: Every book you’ve ever read started as an idea that didn’t exist before. There wasn’t a cover, a title, or even a first chapter—just one person with an idea. This course is about taking that small idea and turning it into a complete story one step at a time.

What You’ll Learn:

Over the next few lessons, you’ll build your story piece by piece. You’ll learn how to:

  • Come up with a story idea
  • Create interesting characters
  • Build a descriptive setting
  • Plan an exciting plot
  • Write believable dialogue
  • Revise your work like an author

Before You Move On…

Think about the stories you enjoy reading. Do you like adventures? Mysteries? Funny books? Fantasy? You don’t need to decide what you’ll write just yet. In the next lesson, you’ll explore different ways authors come up with story ideas. Before going to the next activity, make sure to fill out the My Story Journal worksheet to think about the kinds of books you enjoy and why you enjoy them.
